The Supernova afghan/blanket features the eight-pointed star, a much-loved symbol in Nordic and Viking folklore. It is believed to have magical powers for protection, hope and harmony.
The blanket is worked one piece, in mosaic garter stitch, in rounds and flat. Different size and shape options are given. The sample is asymmetrical, worked in rounds from the centre of the smallest star. To achieve the asymmetrical look, two sides are cast off and work continues over two other sides in rows, back and forth. For rectangular shape, one side is cast off and then worked over one side in rows to the desired length. A boucle yarn was used for a textured look. However, a wide range of yarns can be used.
Charts provided enable to knit a much larger square blanket. The gauge is not important for this project. Choose an aran / worsted weight yarn and matching needles. Using different fibres affect the size of the blanket and the amount of yarn needed. The advantage of working from the centre out is that you can control the yarn consumption and knit until desired measurements are achieved or run out of yarn.
