Surrender to the warmth, surrender to the stripedness, but most of all, surrender to the ease and quickness of this pattern! I started knitting this piece in cream on the bias, and when I had worked a few rows, it did kind of look like a surrender flag. Surrender is a garter stitch, bias-knit shawlette or scarf knit in two and a half skeins of super bulky weight yarn. I used Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick and Quick with their Cream shade for the background, and then their Cranberry and Charcoal shades as accent stripes. You wouldn’t have to add stripes, but they do give a nice accent to the pattern. The stripes can be added in any thickness or order, and you can choose 1 color for a solid scarf, 2, 3, or more colors for many stripes. Depending on whether you attach your new yarn on a right side or wrong side row, you can achieve different looks for the striping too. ** Notice in the pictures that one side of my scarf has solid stripes, and the other side has a solid stripe with 2 rows of “dashes” surrounding the stripe.** You can mix and match these 2 types of stripes simply by starting the new color on a different side. There really is no “right side” to this pattern as both sides look equally attractive. The border is worked in short rows with the wrap and turn technique. My sample using the two and a half skeins worked up to be over 6 feet in length and a foot and a half at its widest point. It is an asymmetrical piece that wraps nicely around the body in many different ways. Because this is a bulky weight yarn, this project works up within a day or two. And…no blocking! The wool/acrylic blend maintains its shape really well. Have any bulky weight yarn lurking in your stash? Surrender to this project for a quick and impressive gift or a treat for yourself!
