This dubbelmössa (double hat) is the perfect place to pull a fisk (“fish”) out of a mössa (“hat”)! The hat is knit in two layers, making it reversible, so fish will come out of either end! The fish “swim” one direction on the red side and the other direction on the blue side. The double layer, all-over pattern is based on the Binge knitting tradition of Halland, a province along the southwestern coast of Sweden. (Binge is pronounced “binga,” derived from an old Swedish word for “knitting.”)

The three-color pattern of this hat reflects traditional Binge colors—red, navy blue, and white—but here the traditional red with a brighter blue and creamy white better suits this lighthearted child’s garment. A contemporary fish image stands out as a central design element alongside traditional Binge patterns. Knit this hat in wool for cold weather ice-fishing adventures or in cotton yarn for more temperate weather.
