Patterns for baby socks abound, but here is a pattern/tutorial with some updated techniques. Included are photos and clear instructions for making the ribbing, heel, and toe. This is a good pattern for someone who is making their first sock. It was written especially for a CAL group of wide-ranging skills.

By using different weights of yarn and different sized hooks, you can make several sizes. Shown are socks made with both fingering weight and sport weight cottons. I particularly like using the stretch cottons, like Fortissima. The cuff can be turned down for more of a bootie look. They are really cute when you make the heel and toe a different color than the foot and ribbing.

In addition to the written pattern and photos, there are charts for the different steps. I kept the photos and charts to a minimum for easier printing. You will need to know the ch, ss, sc, blo sc and how to work in rows and rounds. Special techniques are explained, such as sc2tog.
