Sweet Mochi is the third pattern in the “From Japan With Love” pattern bundle. Additional patterns in this bundle will be released throughout the year.

Bobblicious!
The inspiration for this dress was the lovely traditional Japanese treats of the same name, which are often presented as an assortment of pastel-colored, pillowy spheres.

CONSTRUCTION:

This dress is worked seamlessly from the top down, first flat, then in the round, with a circular/raglan hybrid yoke. A bobble bind off is worked at the flutter sleeve edges. After the sleeves are bound off, an A-line skirt is worked in the round and finished by a bobble bind off at the hem. An applied I-cord is worked for a neat neckline finish.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

long-tail cast on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, I-cord edging, applied I-cord (explained in pattern), yarn over, picking up stitches, bobble bind off (explained in pattern, link to video tutorial).

SIZES:

3mo (6mo, 12mo, 18mo // 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, 10yo)
To fit chest: 16 (17, 18, 19 // 21, 23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches or 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5 // 53.5, 58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71) cm.
Garment chest: 18 (19.25, 20, 21.25 // 22.75, 25.25, 26.75, 28.75, 30) inches or 45.5 (49, 51, 54 // 58, 64, 68, 73, 76) cm.

Please note: I recommend selecting a size whose finished chest measurement is closest to the child’s actual chest.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

  • Approximately 350 (400, 450, 500 // 600, 750, 800, 900, 1000) yards or 320 (366, 411, 457 // 549, 686, 732, 823, 914) meters of fingering weight yarn in Main Color (MC)
  • approximately 100 yards or 91 meters in Contrasting (CC) Color. Note: If doing a single-colored version, add up the yardage given above.

NEEDLES:

  • US 4 or 3.5mm 16-inch or 40cm circular needle or size needed to match stockinette gauge. Note: for sizes 6yo and up, a 24-inch or 60cm needle may be more comfortable
  • US 2 1/2 or 3mm (or two sizes smaller than circular needle above) 24-inch or 60cm circular needle or size needed to match garter stitch gauge.
  • set of dpns matching above size (for neckline I-cord).

NOTIONS:

  • 5 stitch markers (including a different color marker to mark the beginning of round)
  • tapestry needle
  • one button 2/3-inch or 1.5 cm in diameter

GAUGE:

24 sts x 32 rows = 4 inches or 10cm in stockinette stitch using larger needles
26 sts x 64 rows (i.e. 32 ridges) = 4 inches or 10cm in garter stitch using smaller needles
