Protecting 187,000 acres of old growth forest, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encom- passes some of the most diverse ecosystems in North America.
The park is home to 19 species of re ies, including the synchronous re y. Like all re ies, synchronous re ies bioluminesce, and like all re ies they use their ashing lights to signal to potential mates. Unlike other re ies, however,
the male synchronous re ies coordinate their e orts. For two brief weeks each spring, visitors are treated to a spectacular light show as large groups of males ash in unison, creating waves of light that wash across the hillsides.
