Here’s some crocheting fun for you: Mug and plate rugs!

There’s nothing fancy going on here – simply single crochet. However, I am encouraging you to learn and try the foundation single crochet (FSC), instead of a normal chain stitch, to start this project. The FSC beginning will change your crocheting life. Once you practice it, you will be happy with adding that to your crochet “toolbox” It provides a stretchy beginning to many crochet projects and isn’t any more difficult than crocheting into the beginning chain stitches of a conventional chain start. It’s well worth the effort.

I’m also including my foolproof method for keeping crochet edges straight by identifying the last stitch of each row as you go. Beginning, and even experienced crocheters alike, will benefit from this method. You know how sometimes you think you are crocheting rows in a straight piece and somehow the fabric gets narrower or wider? We have all done it. This method will ensure that you keep a consistent stitch count.

I love to crochet cottony things in the warm weather and always have an easy project handy for those “crochet minutes”, or times when I just want to work on something simple. Plymouth, Fantasy Naturale yarn is my cotton yarn of choice for tableware. It holds up to machine washing and drying and comes out like new every time.

Each skein will make 8 mug rugs. Two skeins will make one plate rug and two mug rugs, Each mug rug is approximately 4 1/4” x 4 1/4”, and the plate rug is approximately 12” wide x 16” long. Gauge is 5 stitches/inch in single crochet.

The pieces are crocheted in single crochet rows, and then (optionally) edged all around with single crochet. These projects are perfect for sweaty (you know) cups and glasses in the summer time. Crochet them to match your decor or any party theme. They also make great hostess gifts. Have fun and enjoy your summer! Directions are given for the foundation single crochet start or the conventional chain start.
Enjoy!
