The Taha Moana Cowl is the sibling pattern to the Taha Moana Shawl. This was designed as an alternative to the 3/4 shawl as a yardage-friendly version, plus is much quicker to knit up. Perfect for using up the little scraps of yarn hiding in your stash or the leftover yarn from the Taha Moana Shawl!

The cowl is first knit as a top-down triangular shawl, then joined together and worked in the round. This version of this pattern includes updated instructions for the cowl body for a better fit on the shoulders (instead of sitting on your neck as a straight tube, it will continue to grow and fan out like a triangular shawl).

YARN

  • Fingering/4-ply

  • Yardage for one color stripe: 20-30 yds./18 - 27 each.

Note: in the photos I am wearing a kirituhi stencil. Kirituhi was initially developed so that non-Māori could get “Māori-inspired” tattoos. For Māori, they are used for kapa haka performances and for wāhine to feel empowered—I use it as a forward expression of my cultural heritage without violating the specific mana and tikanga of tā moko. The mana of kirituhi is safe to wear as it is purposefully made to be a “generic” design.

Māori — Native people of New Zealand

Kirituhi — A Māori-inspired tattoo or marking

Kapa haka — Dance performance

Wāhine — Woman

Mana — Authority

Tā moko — A traditional permanent marking of the body and face
