The first shawl in the Along the Evangaline Trail series

The Tangled Garden ~ a labyrinth, arbours, trees, flowers and herbs ~ surrounds an incredible gourmet shop of specialty herb jams, jellies, chutneys and more - all hand created with fresh herbs from the garden and fruits from the famed Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. It holds a special place in our hearts. The intricate lace patterns in this shawl are a reflection of the intertwining nature of this aged and restful garden.

Construction Notes
Tangled Garden is a modified triangular shawl often referred to as ‘heart-shaped’. Knit top down, beginning with a provisionally cast on neck tab, the lace pattern is mirrored on either side of the spine stitch. The upper edge is worked in an eyelet pattern and the shawl is finished with an elegantly simple border which allows the lace pattern to organically form the shaped bottom edge.

Notes are provided for making the shawl smaller or larger. For the smaller size, the top edge will measure approx. 39” / 99cm and the centre back 17” / 43cm; 270yds / 247m of yarn are required.

Techniques
Provisional Cast On instructions are included on page 3.

The ‘ssk’ stitches in this pattern are worked in the modified version described above. There are other ways of working this decrease: e.g. slip 1 knitwise twice, slip 2 back to LN, k2tog tbl or TECHknitter’s SYTK – Slip, Yank, Twist, Knit. Choose whichever method provides the smoothest line in your knitting.

Pattern includes both written and charted directions.

Written Instructions
Full written instructions are provided. The centre spine stitch is formatted in bold in the written instructions and repeats are encased in bold parentheses.

Charted Instructions
The pattern is fully charted. Two magnifications of Charts B and C are presented in the pattern – page 6 shows both charts in their entirety and page 7 & 8 show each chart split into two halves allowing for a larger magnification of each chart. Choose to work either from the charts on page 6 or the charts on pages 7 & 8. The charts are identical.
