It’s really fun to work up this beanie in the tapestry style of crochet. Tapestry crochet is a method where, when working a pattern in two or more colors, the unused color is carried along behind and inside the stitch in the color being worked so there is no stranding behind the work.

You’ll want to make several of these cute beanies for yourself as well as for gifts for Christmas, Hanukah, Birthdays, and many other occasions.

Size: The beanie measures about 9” from crown to brim. The head opening is designed to be stretchy, so one size fits most women and teens. The fit is snug, but not tight. The foam heads in the photos have no hair, so keep in mind the fit over hair will be closer to the head, like a cap.

Two color schemes are shown – the same four colors in a different combination. Of course, you don’t have to follow the color schemes shown. Have fun and create your own favorite color palette.

The Beanies shown in the photos are made with Cloudborn Fibers Highland DK, a 100% Fine Highland Wool, in 4 colors.

NOTE ON YARN: I recently learned that recommended Cloudborn yarn has been discontinued and there is limited availability. While any DK weight yarn should work, I’ve identified yarn almost identical in gauge and very close in color that I think would make an excellent substitute.

King Cole Merino Blend DK, 114 yard skeins, in Aran (#046), Magenta (#793), Bayleaf (#3088) and Petrol (#926) is called a blend, but it is 100% wool.

Another 100% wool is Berroco Ultra Wool DK, 292 yard skeins, in Cream (#8301), Sour Cherry (#83145), Pine (#83149), and Periwinkle (#8333).

Both are machine washable, and both have many other colors available to design your own color scheme.

The same 4 colors are used in both beanies and 1 skein of each color is more than enough for the two beanies shown. Any DK weight yarn should work but check your gauge.

Skill Level: Some experience is helpful. It’s not difficult to follow the pattern but colorwork does require concentration on the instructions and attention to your stitch count. Counting stitches is really the key to successful color work. Because it is worked in the round and with multiple colors, it’s a little too complicated to be a suitable first crochet project. An advanced beginner with some experience might find it a little challenging but should be able to handle it.

Materials:

Hooks: F Hook (3.75 MM) and E Hook (3.50MM) (see Gauge below and adjust hook sizes if needed)

Stitch Markers

Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

Yarn: 1 skein each of 4 colors, DK wool.
SEE NOTE ON YARN ABOVE.

Cloudborn: Dolphin Blue, Ivory, Magenta, Moss
King Cole: Petrol, Aran, Magenta, Bayleaf
Berroco: Periwinkle, Cream, Sour Cherry, Pine

Gauge: 4 stitches and 3 rows in Half Double Crochet (HDC) equal about 1”. Since you are crocheting in the round, each 3 rows in HDC add about 2” to the diameter. After Round 12, the diameter is about 8”.
