You’re going to love creating this beret in the tapestry style of crochet. Tapestry crochet is a method where, when working a pattern in two colors, the unused color is carried along behind and inside the stitch for the used color. The second color is attached the first time it is used and there is no stranding behind the work. The method creates a sturdy yet flexible fabric, perfect for a beret. You’ll want to make several for yourself as well as for gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah, Birthdays, Mothers’ Day, Showers, and so many other occasions.

Size: The flat part of the beret measures about 10” across. The head opening is designed to be stretchy, so one size fits most women. If you are making it for a small child, you may want to make 1 additional decrease on each of the decrease rows; if you are making it for a larger than average head size, you may want to make one less decrease on each of the decrease rows.

Two color schemes are suggested. Of course, you don’t have to follow the color schemes shown. Have fun and create your own favorite color palette.

The beret featured is made with Cascade 220 Sport weight yarn, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, in 5 colors. Any sport weight yarn should work.

Skill Level: Some experience is helpful. It’s not difficult to follow the pattern but it does require concentration on the instructions and attention to your stitch count. Counting stitches is really the key to successful color work. Because it is worked in the round and with multiple colors, it’s not a suitable first crochet project. An advanced beginner with some experience might find it a little challenging but should be able to handle it.

Materials:
Hook: F Hook (3.75 MM) (see Gauge below and adjust hook size if needed)
Stitch Markers
Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

Yarn: Cascade 220 Sport - 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 1 skein each of five colors. Each skein is 164 yards. 5 skeins are plenty for the two color schemes featured. If you change up the order of your colors, you actually can make 2 more berets from the 5 skeins. I made 4 berets. The key is, each beret uses up a good bit of Color A while Color C is the least used color, so for a 3rd and 4th beret, adjust your color scheme accordingly. For the featured berets, here were my color schemes:

Color Scheme #1
Color A Ruby
Color B Golden Rod
Color C Italian Plum
Color D Cotton Candy
Color E Como Blue

Color Scheme #2
Color A Italian Plum
Color B Cotton Candy
Color C Ruby
Color D Golden Rod
Color E Como Blue

Gauge: 5 single crochet stitches and 4 rows equal about 1”. Since you are crocheting in the round, each 4 rows add about 2” to the diameter.
