In my quest for hand knitted Dutch fisherman’s ganseys I also find a lot of hand knitted ganseys from other countries than the Netherlands. So I came across a fisherman’s gansey handknitted by mrs. Bishop from Sheringham around 1900 for her husband Tarr Bishop. He was a crabfisherman in Sheringham (Norfolk) at the English east coast above London. The story goes she was fond of a very tight fit. Sometimes the ears of her children bled after their sweaters finally had been pulled over their ears….
Between the cuff and the leg of this sock there are three rigs. In Norfolk and Yorkshire these rigs are also named ‘rig and fur’ as in ploughing.
