One of the fabled Infinity Stones, the Tesseract is a source of unlimited energy and can be used to open a gateway to any part of the universe. Hidden on Earth by ancient Asgardians, the Tesseract passed through many hands on its way to being held by S.H.I.E.L.D., who tried to use it as an energy resource and to make weapons. Loki had other ideas, namely to use the Tesseract as a portal to allow in alien armies to defeat Earth’s mightiest heroes and set himself up as ruler of the planet. That really didn’t work out so well for him. The Tesseract is back on Asgard under heavy guard, so it can’t be used for evil again. At least for a little while.
