A beautiful, springy, garter stitch shawl with a knitted on edging in an elegant leaf pattern.

The leaf pattern in the lace is just as pretty whether on the wrong or right side, and as the rest of the shawl is garter stitch, it looks just as lovely no matter which way round you pop it on!

This shawl is knitted from the top down, so starts with only 3 stitches. The centre of the shawl is garter stitch with eyelets running along the top edge. Along the bottom edge a lace border is knitted on, by casting on an additional 17 sttiches and then knitting short rows of between 18 and 20 stitches until there are no main stitches left on the needle.

It is rather quick to knit up, with its greatest constituant being good old garter stitch. It is, therefore, an ideal knit for a birthday (or other) gift.

As this shawl is predominantly garter stitch and the lace runs at a right angle to the body, it is an ideal beginner lace shawl. Even if you do go wrong with the lace, you’ll only have tink back or frog the short rows of edging rather than rows consisting of 100s of stitches.

The maths to make this shawl larger or smaller are included in the pattern which has both written and chart instructions.
