This Dragonpine Designs pattern was designed by Patti-Ann Williamson.

This cowl is designed to show off long colour transition worsted-weight yarn in an attractive Fair Isle pattern. The cowl can also be optionally lined to give double-layer warmth! The instructions for the cowl are fully written, but there is a chart for the colourwork section. The lining is optional, and if you choose to do the lining it makes the cowl fully reversible (with either the plain or Fair Isle side out). With the lining knitted, the cast on edge is done provisionally and is seamlessly grafted to the live stitches on the needle at the end. For maximum impact, it is recommended that you choose a solid yarn to compliment your gradient or long colour stripe yarn, but make sure that the colour in your solid is not present in your gradient. This will ensure that no matter where you are in the colour gradient, your Fair Isle work will always show up. This would also be beautiful using two solid yarns, or reversing the colours: using the long colour transition yarn as your main colour (MC), and the solid as your complimentary colour (CC).

Included in the pattern are full instructions for the provisional crochet cast on (only required if a lining is knit for the cowl), and how to graft (also called the Kitchener stitch).

280m solid-colour yarn (this will be your MC; if you are not knitting a lining, only 165m is required of the MC)
120m gradient or long colour striping yarn (this will be your CC)
5mm x 60cm circular needles
6mm x 60cm circular needles
5mm (or smaller) circular needle of any length (in addition to the 60cm circular needle above)
6mm crochet hook (required only if knitting a lining)
Waste yarn in a contrasting colour but similar weight (required only if knitting a lining)
