This cap went through several manifestations before it evolved into its current form; my goal was to create something I would want and need during my first winter in Cleveland, hence the name. It’s knit mostly in garter stitch using a bulky wool yarn, so it’s both very warm and quick to work up. Instead of a traditional knit-and-purl ribbing, the ribbing on this hat is formed by knitting a panel of garter stitch, grafting the ends together, and then picking up stitches from one edge to knit the top of the hat.

Difficulty: Easy/Medium

Supplies:
154 yds medium-bulky wool yarn with varying thickness (I used two balls of Skacel Chinook, 100% wool)
US 9 circular needle or straight needles
US 10 double-pointed needles
Stitch marker
Safety pins or scrap yarn
Ruler or tape measure
Weaving needle

Skills:
Knit
Pick up and knit
I-cord
Slip-slip-knit (ssk) decrease: slip two stitches to right needle, then insert left needle into both stitches and knit them together

Finished circumference: to fit 22” (24”) head
