This pattern came to me the morning of a major surgery – I was casting on for it while I had the pre-surgery meeting with my surgical team! The pattern stuck with me even through anesthesia, and I spent my hospital stay charting it out and working on the first sock.

The name is drawn from both a favourite passage from the Bible (Isaiah 43:2) and my enduring love of the myth of the Phoenix. Both of those things remind me that new life can spring from ashes, and that we are not destroyed by what we survive, merely transformed by it into something better.

In this pattern you will find:

• a super-comfortable heel cup with absolutely no wrap/turn short-row stitches
• a specialty Japanese wrap stitch in the cuff - as such, read the key carefully – this pattern uses non-standard notation
• a photo tutorial for the specialty stitch
