The name of this cowl was inspired by Aberdeen, Scotland. Known as the “Granite City”, Aberdeen is built from granite and its textured buildings twinkle in the sun. This stylish scarf pattern uses a chain and double crochet combination, known as granite stitch (also known as moss stitch, linen stitch or tweed stitch).

When worked in a richly speckled yarn, the texture and look of the cowl is reminiscent of the dressed granite of Aberdeen’s buildings, particularly when worked in pink, grey and cream tones which echo the tones of the minerals in the granite.

You will need:
100g of wool rich aran weight yarn (measuring at least ~170m, measuring at least ~170m, ideally 200m). If using 2 colours, then 50g (85-90m) of each colour.
5 mm crochet hook.
Yarn needle.

Working to gauge is very important as this project is designed as a 1 ball project - using most/all of the available yarn. Instructions are given on how to adjust the pattern if you come up short.

Level = improving beginner:
This pattern is suitable for those who have just started to crochet and want to build their confidence by completing a more challenging pattern. Both UK and US versions of the pattern are included.

Pattern characteristics:
The scarf has a half twist, like a Möbius strip, and each row adds to both the top and bottom of the scarf. The first rows you complete end up in the centre of the scarf and it grows outwards in both directions. Take this into account if using stripes and when planning your colour usage. We will start this project using a “foundation double crochet row” (US foundation single crochet row) which creates the foundation chain and the first row in one go. This makes a consistent, more flexible core to your scarf.

Pattern Notes:
This pattern uses: UK double crochet, treble crochet, chains and slip stitch (US single crochet, double crochet, chains and slip stitch). This pattern also introduces new stitches such as the foundation double crochet (US foundation single crochet) and the crab stitch (reverse double crochet/reverse single crochet). Instructions are provided for these 2 stitches. There are also charted instructions for the cowl
