This is a contemporary version of a snazzy snood hat from 1965. Done in cool winter blues, it’s the perfect accessory for a snowy landscape.

It is inspired by the booklet “New Hat Fashions in Wool - Styled by Hilde.” It’s Volume 112 and originally cost 40 cents. The “Fashions in Wool” line was prolific and on the cover was the credit that they were all “Styled by Hilde.” On the inside front cover, the copyright belonged to Hilde Fuchs. She is listed as the Editor and Designer.

I spent hours on the internet looking for more information on Ms. Fuchs and the company Fashions in Wool. None of the patterns ever mention a brand name yarn to use for the pattern, simple instructions like wool, angora, mohair, and the amounts needed, so there was no sponsorship or support from that part of the industry. It’s not surprising, however, that the large yarn companies wouldn’t support a female independent designer who had her own business and wasn’t about to just give away her work for little money, with no rights or recognition. Not in the 1950s and 1960s. This is my nod to her for creating the role of Independent Designers in the Fiber Industry.

It is worked with two strands of yarn held together. The bow is attached with a safety pin and can be worn in the front or side of the hat. There is a plethora of color combinations and you might end up making more than one..
