As soon as I saw The Hobbit for the first time, I realized that there was something missing from my life -- Bofur’s hat. I scoured the internet for a suitable trapper hat knitting pattern, but for the life of me I couldn’t find one. So, instead I used THIS sewing pattern as a baseline to create a knitting pattern, and I am very pleased with how it turned out. And what I mean is I wear it everyone and almost never take it off. ;)

This hat is made in multiple pieces. I looked at several different patterns that made the hat all one piece, but since one of my favorite aspects of the hat are the seams along the top, I wanted it to be more of a constructed piece. I’m going to refer back to that original sewing pattern a couple of times, actually, because I didn’t have the forethought to take in progress pictures, and she has some that might help while you’re sewing the pieces together. Also, I’ve drawn some diagrams that may or may not be useful.

MATERIALS:
• US 8 and 13 needles. (I’d recommend circulars, at least for the 8s, because the top piece is very long, but it’s up to you.)
• Lion Brand Homespun “Edwardian” (lining)
• Vanna’s Choice “Taupe” (outer shell)
• Tapestry needle
• Craft wire

IMPORTANT NOTES:
--You basically have to make this hat twice -- the lining and the outer shell. I thought I should tell you about that upfront.
--The lining is made with larger needles, bulkier yarn, and is done in garter stitch.
--The shell is done all in stockinette stitch, and you will need to block it before you sew those pieces together.
--The is the first time I’ve written a knitting pattern for other people to use. I’m sorry if it’s terrible.
