The Navigator: Country Roads is a cabled scarf designed for a winter drive. Tuck this scarf snugly around your neck and be toasty warm as you zip around the corners.

The inspiration for this pattern is my enthusiasm for classic car rallying. I designed it to represent the maps I use as navigator of our rally team. With background patterns drawn from the legends of topographic maps, the roads travel through pine plantations and inundated ground. There are two team-mate scarves: The Driver: Squealing Wheels and The Mechanic.

The red cables show how the roads on the map wind themselves together and out as the navigator tries to find the right route. Knitting this scarf requires you to pay attention, just like map reading. The cable crosses and background patterns vary as you travel along the winding country roads.

The Navigator is designed to be about 155cm long and 19cm wide. It is easy to add more repeats of the cable pattern if you would like a longer scarf.

The scarf is best worked in a smooth woollen yarn for warmth and stitch definition. A yarn with yardage of about 200 m (220 yds) per 100 grams is recommended. A solid or very slightly varied colour will best show the cables and texture.

The pattern includes full charted and written instructions.
