In the chilly winters of our northern states, hats are a necessity and a way of life, especially when the temperature slides down below zero. They keep our heads warm, our ears free from frost and with a brim, the blowing snow from our eyes. Hats can be all colors from soft and subtle to wild and wooly; innumerable designs can be knit into their surfaces; and they can be a real statement of one’s lifestyle and feelings towards that winter wonderland out there.

This little booklet hopes to encourage knitters everywhere to turn things upside down, make a statement, invent, experiment and generally have fun with the ancient and glorious craft of knitting while making one hat or lots of hats for friends and family.

Yarn: Good sport yarn (3-Ply). Other yarns may be used. Approximately 100 gms.

Hat has 120 stitches and should measure 20 to 20 1/2 inches around.

Needles: #3 or #4 DP

Sizes: Average (Large, X-Large); 120 st. (128 st., 136 st.) If you are working in 2 ply worsted or homespun, you might want to use 112 st. for average size.

The following charts are given for the design band: Vines, Snow Star, Hearts, Apples, Sheep, and Puffins
