There are 3 size variations for this shawl. To complete the smallest variation (“Short”) you will need at least 600 yards of fingering weight yarn. There are a few extendable rows at the end of this size should you find yourself with more yarn and the desire to continue for a few more rows. (“Short” version has 168 rows with the potential to work to row 176.)

The “Standard” version uses the entirety of two skeins of Polka (100 grams/400 yards each equalling 200 grams/800 yards total). This brings you through 194 rows of the pattern.

The “Extended” version follows the same chart/instructions as the “Standard” size, but continues to row 210. For this you will want an additional 40 grams (160 yards) of yarn. These last 16 rows can be repeated until your shawl is the desired size.

The 600-yard version of the shawl was designed to work with Interlude yarn (150g; 600yd; fingering weight). This was a special edition yarn dyed for this design and it is no longer available. The suggested yarn in the pattern is Polka (or Polka Sock). The yards per gram of these two yarns is the same and either may be used in place of the other.

The Philosopher’s Stone is the final shawl design from The Elements Collection. Each shawl in this series was first knit as a Mystery Knit-Along (MKAL). This particular shawl originally had issues with editing and yardage. The final clue was not test knit before release resulting in extreme yardage issues. The notes above on yardage for each size are the corrected notes and yarn requirements. Any errors found in the final section have also been updated.
