This shawl was designed using Swoolk, a 50/50 blend of merino and silk. Swoolk has a wonderful drape and a sheen that gives the colors a luminescent glow – 50% merino / 50% silk; 438 yards; 100 grams; fingering weight.

Pattern Availability: Water is a mystery knit-a-long which begins on July 10, 2015. The pattern will be released in clues with the first piece being posted the morning of Friday, July 10, 2015. The next 3 clues will be released on July 17, 24, & 31. The completed pattern in one PDF file with photos will be released on Friday, August 7.

Needles: US 4 / 3.5mm needle (40” circular or longer)

Shape and Size: Water has (knit at gauge) an approximate unblocked wingspan of 60″ (5 feet). If you knit tighter than gauge or use a lighter yarn your shawl will be smaller. This is a moderate sized shawl. The stitches are nothing similar, but for general shape and size you can take a look at Amethyst. Water will also feature a scooped bottom and optional beaded bind off.

Stitches: There are some basic cable crosses, traveling stitches, and lace. Wrong side rows are “Resting”!

Color: Water is best suited to a solid/semi-solid yarn to show off the stitches. A variegated yarn will mask the stitches you are working so hard to knit, so it will be best to avoid those colors.

Yardage: My shawl came in using around 160 grams of yarn (or about 700 yards). Please keep in mind that you may use more or less depending on your knitting style and whether you match gauge.

Beads: I’ve chosen to work a beaded bind off on my shawl. This is completely optional. If you decide to go for it you will need Size 6 seed beads. I use Dyna•Mites seed beads. To bead every stitch on the bind off you would need 361 beads. You could also decide to bead every other stitch, or less as desired. The Amethyst shawl shows what a beaded-every-stitch bind off looks like.

Don’t Spoil the Fun!
When/if you create a project page on Ravelry please remember to post a placeholder photo such as a swatch, yarn, or logo as your first photo of the project. Post in-progress photos after this so as we knit people will not see spoiler photos. The fun of an MKAL is the surprise, so please do not take that away from your fellow knitters!
