11/21/09 Edit: Lots of people were getting a hat that was too small for their heads! I added Large Size Hat sizing that will add 4 inches to the width of the band and 3 inches to the depth.

This pattern is very easily adaptable to any bulky or worsted weight yarn you want to use, just hold two strands of worsted together while knitting. The cables are stretchy, and if the finished hat is slouchier, all the better.

I used two strands of Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn because I lose hats like it is my job! But if you are more responsible with your hats than I am make a fancy one!
