This cowl is worked in the round and is reversible with a distinct lace pattern emerging on each side. It can be worn in one large loop or doubled around the neck. The name of the cowl is a nod to the show “Stranger Things” where The Upside Down is an alternate dimension existing in parallel to the dimension inhabited by humans.

Three skeins of Alpha B Luxe B DK were used to make the cowl (two skeins of Sharkskin and one of Airy blue). This yarn is 50% Superwash Merino wool / 50% Silk and has amazing drape and excellent stitch definition. It’s also a great choice for warmer weather months.

Feel free to experiment with pure wool or other fiber blends, add more colors or even make the entire cowl solid if you wish. The slip stitch design on one side of the cowl and textured diagonal lace on the other provide loads of visual interest even when just one color of yarn is used. The slipped stitches in particular will look stunning when knit in super colorful variegated and speckled yarns.

You should be able to knit and purl stitches, knit two stitches together, do yarn overs and slip stitches. You should also be able to knit in the round on circular knitting needles.

The finished cowl measures approximately 60” around and 8” in width.
