This is my first attempt at pattern writing - so please bear with me!

I’ve been making Very Hungry Caterpillars for a while for friends and family so the original knitting notes were for my own benefit. I’ve finally added them to Ravelry for others to use following a request from a fellow Instagrammer.

I hope you enjoy making your Very Hungry Caterpillar from these instructions - if you have problems with them, do please let me know.

And do please put up your Very Hungry Caterpillar pics - I’d love to see them!

I have added a second version of the Very Hungry Caterpillar pattern because - as somebody has quite rightly pointed out (and my husband would second this most fervently) - I have used a rather unwise font in the original version which does not make it easy to use :( Sorry. Hope the second version makes it easier.

Yarn
I have also been asked about the yarn that I used so I will add a note here explaining the variety of yarns used.

I was lucky enough to find a large cone of emerald green mohair in a charity shop, and that is the colour that I used for all the strong green segments that you see repeatedly in my Very Hungry Caterpillars. No name or identification on the cone, I’m afraid.

I also found other odd balls of dark green mohair in charity shops.

These charity shop finds were supplemented with Rowan Kidsilk Haze. And these are the colours I used:

  • Jelly (597) predominantly
  • Fern (629) - also predominantly
  • Strawberry (614) for the head
  • Trance (582) mixed with other colours
  • Alhambra (666) mixed with other colours
  • Forest Green (651) for the odd segment

In addition I have two very pale greens KSH which I think may be Smoke (605), Drab (611) and Heavenly (592) and I mixed strands of these with other colours to get the mottled colour palette which you see in the original VHC illustrations.
