This afghan was knit as a fundraiser for a memorial park for Sgt. Greg Moore and others lost in the line of duty. The idea was conceived by Kelley Hobart of Alpaca Direct, who also donated the yarn.
Members of our knitting group made the blocks, stitched them together, and applied the binding. The afghan is made of 42 blocks with finished dimensions of approximately 60” by 70”, but can
be easily sized to meet your needs by adding or subtracting blocks.
We used 10 skeins of Berroco Vintage Worsted weight yarn in color #5101 Mochi (cream), and 7 skeins of color #51182 (indigo).

Vintage is one of my go-to worsted weight yarns. It is
75% wool and 25% acrylic – easy care, great colors, and wears incredibly well. Did I mention that it is very reasonably priced, as well? Plymouth Encore would be another excellent yarn for
this project for all the same reasons. It is 75% acrylic and 25% wool. We wound most of the yarn (reserving one skein of each color for the borders) into minis and sent each volunteer knitter home with about a half skein of each color. This was enough to do two blocks. Blocks were sewn together into strips, then, the strips were stitched into place. Since the garter blocks are so wonderfully stretchy, it’s easy to align blocks and strips that might vary somewhat in size. Just be sure that the edges of each color line are aligned and work any excess in. Pieces were all joined using the mattress stitch.
