The classic Thorpe pattern has been updated. I originally published this pattern way back in 2007. Over the past 12 years my pattern writing style has changed significantly, and I wanted to bring Thorpe up to my current standards.

I have revised the beginning of the hat to make it easier to work, and have created a video tutorial for starting the hat here: https://youtu.be/FGmLGIQonsw

The new version includes the original solid and all-over color work version, as well as two new options for adding bands of color work.

I have extended the sizing to include both larger and smaller sizes. Thorpe will now fit anywhere from a 17-26.5” / 43-67 cm circumference head. The new finished measurements are:

15 [17, 19.25, 21.25, 23.5]” / 38 [43, 49, 54, 59.5] cm. Thorpe is meant to be worn with 2-3” / 5-7.5 cm of negative ease. To find your size, choose a finished measurement 2-3” / 5-7.5 cm smaller than your head measurement.

These new sizes are also included for the allover color work version.

Thorpe is a top down, earflap hat with optional crochet edging and braids. Charts are given for an allover stranded color work version as well as the two new bands of color work.

Optional instructions are given for working the edging in contrasting garter stitch with an Icelandic Bind-Off.

You will find a video tutorial on the Icelandic Bind-Off used at the brim here: https://youtu.be/sG0FHqbt5sA
