I wanted to knit mittens from the top like socks…

With the winter months coming, I felt a desire to knit mittens. My hands are ALWAYS cold, I suffer from Raynaud’s and I needed some quality mittens to get through the season. I began the search for the perfect mitten pattern. I wanted to knit them two-at-a-time, from the top down, the same way I knit my socks. The hunt was on.

I quickly realized, the majority of knitted mitten patterns are knitted from the cuff… I was bummed to say the least. I had a vision in my head of exactly what I wanted in a mitten and couldn’t find anything of the sort out there.

I specifically wanted a mitten pattern; mittens allow your fingers to be against each other sharing body heat between them. This was ideal for me, as keeping body heat in my hands helps to prevent Raynaud’s attacks the best.

I wanted to develop the pattern for use with any weight yarn, starting in the same manner as the socks I knit, and BONUS, if I could have them be convertible to allow me to wear them and expose my fingers for use without having to remove the mittens completely. A top-down, fingerless mitten combo.

With that, the Tip to Flip Mitts were born.
