This shawl pattern was inspired by a trip to Rome in 2018. One of things my husband and I like to do when exploring a new City is to make sure that we make some time between the usual tourist attractions to find a coffee shop (or if its later in the afternoon a small bar ) off the beaten track. Here we will sit for an hour or two and just soak up the atmosphere of the city and watch as people go about their daily life.

One such afternoon we found ourselves in a quiet piazza in Trastevere, a bohemian area of the city with winding cobbled lanes and colourful buildings. Having spent most of the morning exploring we decided to take a break in a small, quiet café. My husband got out his book and I of course found my knitting. As the shadows of the afternoon grew longer, we had a few drinks and enjoyed the simplicity of just being in the moment, without any agenda for the rest of the evening. It remains one of my favourite memories of our visit to Rome.

The Trastevere Shawl invites you to kick back and relax and enjoy being in the moment as you explore colours and textures through your knitting. The simple ‘slip 1, knit one’ stitch pattern creates a stitch pattern reminiscent of cobblestone streets, each colour creating a new path. The pattern works beautifully with 6 or more mini-skiens, or why not use it to go stash busting. At the end of this pattern you will find a handy checklist that will help you to determine how much yarn you will need for each section.

The beauty of this design is that you can just keep going. The simple repeats allow for new colours to be constantly added. It’s up to you whether you follow an established sequence of colours or find new combinations as you traverse through your Trastevere Shawl. You can even add a flourish of tassels at the end too if you wish!
