Use up your leftover sock yarn by knitting a preemie cap for donation to a local hospital. The Tree of Life design is especially suited for this purpose.

This pattern takes far less then 1/4 skein of sock yarn. The gauge listed is for the cap knit, but don’t worry about matching it - larger gauges will fit larger babies!

The pattern includes written description of hat construction but the purling patterns for the gansey style pattern are charted. Several features of gansey knitting are used - the Channel Island Cast On, a garter stitch band, and traditional patterns including the Tree of Life and a diamond band.

This pattern was a winner in the Knitmore Girls Head to Toe Preemie Cap contest and will be available in an e-booklet with the other caps at some point in the future. Check out the Knitmore Girls podcast site for more information.
