Power from the green witch, lost beneath the sea. by Susan Cooper, Greenwitch, The Dark is Rising Sequence

Trewissick has seaweedy lace meandering from the cuff down the front and back of the leg. The simple lace extends onto the top of the foot and the heel flap also carries the textural influence of the lace. The sock ends with a simple wedge toe and just a little bit of Kitchener stitch.

Trewissick’s swaying lace looks like the woven hawthorn and hazel leaves and branches of the Greenwitch, from the Susan Cooper book of the same name. The Greenwitch is a creature of power, made by the women in the fictional village of Trewissick, to be cast into the sea in the Cornish spring.

Tonal, solid or long run gradient colourways are recommended. A highly variegated yarn is not recommended as the look of the lace and texture may be lost.

These socks are best worked in a blend of wool and nylon yarn with a yardage of about 400 meters (437 yards) of yarn per 100 grams. An estimated 265, 325 or 385 metres (290, 360 or 425 yds) is needed for the small, medium and large socks.

The pattern has charts and line-by-line written instructions. It has been tested by the excellent jdsc, Canberra, steelelady, yarna, lynnbeggs, kaisukka, FromMy2Hands2009, Frau12Emma and nevolik.
