This pattern was featured in Godey’s Magazine, in 1865. Like many period patterns, this under-sleeve is worked in what we now call Tunisian crochet. This creates a softer and more elastic stitch, that is more comparable to knitwear.

I first, made this sleeve with a sport weight wool. The original pattern calls for Shetland wool. Which, is lace weight. This made zero sense to me, until I saw other patterns with Shetland wool. Some mentioning holding multiple strands of yarn together, to create a thicker yarn.

Therefore, the period approach most likely used multiple strands of lace weight wool at once. Because of this, I have two options available on this pattern. You can make it with sport weight yarn, or 2 strands of lace weight.

I did make some adjustments to the pattern, but did my best to create something that looked like the period image in the magazine. I hope you enjoy the pattern and it helps keep you nice and warm! ~ Jamie
