This pattern starts at the bottom point of the shawl, and rapidly increases outwards at the edges to give you lots of luscious silk to wrap around yourself. The lace pattern is easily memorized (just think 10, 8, 6, 4) but don’t abandon the stitch markers. They’re what keep your brain free to enjoy the knitting.
