About this Design
Sometimes a sock design is just all about the yarn, and that was certainly the case with the Tweedle Dum Tweedle Dee Socks. Recently I spent an afternoon experimenting with dying tonal semi-solids and I produced two gorgeous skeins of yarn — one was a moody blend of deep blues, purples and rich dark reds and the other was an ebullient blend of bright yellows and pale oranges. As complementary colours, these two yarns were crying out for a design that allowed them to play together and shine together.

The two-colour nubby stitch pattern that I used for these socks looks much more complicated than it really is — I never cease to be amazed at how adding colour to a simple k1 p1-based stitch pattern can unlock exciting new stitch pattern opportunities ☺. The tweedy two-colour pattern is contrasted beautifully by the single row contrasting stripe on the sole of the foot and then echoed again in the cuff with a two-colour slip stitch faux rib pattern.

By alternating the two colours in my second pair of socks I was able to produce my Tweedle Dum Socks (purple + yellow) and my Tweedle Dee Socks (yellow + purple). Unless you have very wide and very long feet, you should be able to get two pairs of complementary socks from two 100g skeins of yarn. Keep one pair for yourself, and (if you can bear to part with them), gift the other pair to someone important to you.

Size
To fit foot circumference:
Small 18 cm/7 in
Medium 20 cm/8 in
Large 23 cm/9 in
Extra Large 25.5 cm /10 in

Tension
32 stitches x 48 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in stocking (stockinette) stitch, knitted in the round using 2.25 mm (US size 1, UK size 13) needles.

Yarn
Any sock yarn that knits to approximately 8 st per 2.5 cm/inch will be suitable for this design. For one pair of socks you will need:

Main colour 262.5 metres/287 yards of 4-ply/fingering weight sock yarn (approx. 75g).
Contrast colour 87.5 metres/96 yards of 4-ply/fingering weight sock yarn (approx. 25g).

If you decide to knit two pairs of socks and reverse the colours in your second pair then 2 x 100g 4-ply/fingering weight sock yarn (350 metres/383 yards) should do the job nicely.

The stitch pattern in these socks will be beautifully showcased if you select a light and a dark colour combination.

Needles
A pair of 2.25 mm (US size 1, UK size 13) 61 cm/24 in circular needles.
Optional 2.5 mm (US size 1, UK size 12) circular needles for the cuff.

Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
