The stitch pattern of these mitts has a way of catching light in a way that leads to interesting shadows. This pattern was designed with the Total Solar Eclipse or 2024 in mind. Umbraphile means “Shadow Lover.”

The mitts are worked from the cuff up, working a standard gusset with reverse stockinette stitch thumb and twisted stitches. The thumb stitches are placed on hold while the palm and top cuff are finished. The thumb is finished quickly in matching ribbing. There are three sizes to choose from. The weight of yarn chosen will affect the finished fit and dimensions. A fingering or light sport is recommended. Feel free to play around with contrast color ribbing or a gradient yarn!

Most people will find a good fit in sizes S/M and L/XL (knit in heavy fingering/light sport), but if you are knitting for someone who likes a snug fit, or has especially petite hands, I’ve included the XS option knit in a lighter fingering!
