These socks use a variation on one of my very favorite stitch patterns—I call it Little Dragon Stitch. The stitch pattern is pretty, but quite a bit wider than some of the other ones out there. To help manage sizing with such a wide stitch pattern, I added ribbing to the sides of the legs of most sizes. It also features a Shaped Common Heel, which needs to be grafted closed, but has no short rows to work.

In photography, we sometimes tell models that a position that feels silly is the one that looks great. This heel is kind of the other way around. It looks rather terrible, especially when freshly worked and unblocked, but it wears like an absolute dream, and is wonderfully suited to people with wide feet and heels.

The sock ends with what I call a Swirl toe. It’s very easy to work and looks rather cool, if I do say so myself.

Finished Measurements

Finished leg length: adjustable to fit
Finished foot length: adjustable to fit

Materials

  • Simply Socks Yarn Company Simply Sock Yarn (80% superwash wool, 20% nylon; 175 yds/160m per 50g skein); color: #530 Wasabi or #410 Golden; 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) skeins
  • US#1 (2.25 mm) needles or size needed to achieve gauge
  • 4 stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • I like to have a smaller, sharper needle at hand for working my lifted increases. It greatly reduces the stress on the yarn and my hands.

Gauge

32 sts and 44 rnds = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch
36 sts and 46 rnds = 4”/10 cm in Little Dragon stitch (charted & written)
