This slouchy beret is knit “flat” by first working a buttonhole placket, then combining a herringbone stitch, short row shaping and a garter stitch border to work the hat around the circumference of the head (rather than top to bottom or vice-versa.) Finally, a garter stitch button placket is added to which you can sew your favourite buttons.

Materials
Yarn: 180 meters (196 yards) aran or worsted weight yarn such as Patons Classic Wool, Malabrigo Merino Worsted, or Cascade Yarns 220 Wool

Notions: Eleven 1.25cm/ 1/2” buttons

Tools: 5 mm (US 8) 40 cm (16”) circular knitting needle, 8 mm (US 11) straight knitting needles, (or sizes/ types needed to obtain gauge); tapestry needle.
