Urðr is the third shawl in a series of three shawls on the theme of the three Norns (Urðr, Verðandi and Skuld) in Norse mythology. They determine the fate of all living creatures by spinning the threads of life. And they water Yggdrasil – the tree of life – so the branches do not dry out or rot.

Urðr’s well is one of the three wells beneath the roots of Yggdrasil and provides the water the Norns use to water the great world tree. The Urðr shawl is circular to represent the well, and dark blue in the centre for the deep well water. The ripples in the centre spread out towards the edging where they become waves.
