“IN THE painting A Funeral Onboard, by Carl Fredrik Sundt-Hansen (1841-1907), there is a young man in a blue pullover at the centre of the picture. The sweater is a spunsetrøye, from the word spons, a term for the plug in a fishing boat. The pattern is simple and typical of many Icelanders, and we used the motif on this cowl, although it could also be used for many other warm garments that protect against wind and weather,” say Line Iversen and Margareth Sandvik, authors of the book Fishermen’s Knits from the Coast of Norway. The cowl is knitted in the round in a 4ply Norwegian wool, and then seamed lengthwise.
