Pattern Description from A Gathering of Lace: “Vanalinn mean Old Town in Estonian. it is a part of Tallinn, the capital of the country, which is just as a traveler would imagine towns to be in this northern part of the world. This oldest part of Tallinn, now surrounded by a modern city, began as an Estonian settlement on the hill called Toompea. Danish, German, Swedish, and Russian influences added to the town as it grew down the hillside and spread out toward the sea. Many of the buildings have survived since Hanseatic times, when Tallinn was an important trading community. Today a traveler can walk the cobbled streets and imagine time long past, stop in cafes hundreds of years old and shop for knitting in an outdoor market nestled into the walls of a monastery near one of the old town gates. I named these gloves for Tallinn’s old town because for me it is a place of magic, of such history and beauty. it has a quiet elegance that is always enchanting. I imagine these gloves worn for a special occasion, perhaps to a wintertime concert of for a walk on a frosty afternoon.”
