This hat is inspired by my Vanilla Latte Sock pattern. In other words, it’s about as easy as it gets and the primary pattern stitch is a broken rib.

I have more fingering weight yarn in my stash than I will ever knit into either socks or shawls and I really want to make something with it. If that sounds familiar, then this pattern is for you.

One day the host of one of my favorite podcasts showed off a hat she had knit out of a busy colorway in doubled fingering weight. I loved it and a light bulb went off – one of those aha moments. I had some of that exact yarn! I did a little online research investigating what weight two strands of fingering yarn would equal when held double. The answer was a DK to light worsted with a bonus that it should reduce the pooling in a multicolored yarn.

I wanted a warm hat knit at a tight gauge. If you want yours to be slouchier, use larger needles to get a looser gauge. The size is up to you. And, of course, if you prefer, you can just knit this in DK or Worsted weight yarn – just divide the yardage by two.
