Design Notes:

“Tarn” is short for T-Shirt Yarn which simply means, yarn made from cut-up strips of t-shirt. Old t- shirts or any suitable fabrics from garments may be used. Strips of the desired width is cut and the strips are joined end to end to make yarn. Instead of t-shirts or other garments, fabric may be used to make “Tarn.” The “Tarn” used for this project is made from strips of taffeta fabric cut at 1cm wide. Taffeta is an interesting fabric to make “Tarn” with because you can cut it at the edge and then rip it into strips. It will rip straight along the fabric. After making many strips, they are knotted together and wound into a ball of yarn. After crocheting with the “Tarn”, the knots are woven in or sewn over with thread to prevent them from unraveling.

The hairband is crocheted from the narrow end so it can be easily made of the length desired. A decorative row is worked along the upper edge of the hairband seamlessly. Elastics are drawn through both ends of the hairband. Where the elastic is knotted, a crocheted cover is sewn.
