This hat pattern is based on those gorgeous hats that we’ve all seen posted on Pinterest, but sadly, with instructions in Russian. I did a bit of backwards engineering, and came up with a basic pattern that you can either knit as is, or you can substitute any eight-stitch cable for the two that are included.

Both hats call for two strands of fingering weight yarn held together. One version uses one skein each of two different colored yarns to create a faux gradient look. It’s a great pattern to use for those odd bits of left-over fingering weight yarn.

The other hat uses all of one skein of a fingering weight yarn. This one works well for those one skeins of a stunning color that we all tend to pick up at festivals with no project in mind.

11/1: I’ve had several people ask about a pompom source. Please check your local yarn store as many have them in stock right now! If you’re in or around Charlotte, NC, stop in my shop, Baskets of Yarn. You can also purchase them on-line (basketsofyarn.com). But, please, check with your local yarn shop first!
