The “standard” granny square pattern uses solid colors in each round. It may use different colors for different rounds, but within a round there is no color variation. Which means that you can use slip stitches to move, almost invisibly, to the corner to prepare for the next round.

With variegated yarn, however -- the sort that changes color as you go -- you can’t do that. The slip stitch lines are quite visible, and it just looks … wrong.

So I decided to write up a pattern for a granny square that can be used with any yarn, variegated or not.

Stitches used: dc (US), chain, slip stitch.

This pattern has fully written instructions and is suitable for a beginner. There is also a partial chart, but the chart image alone can’t be used. I may add a more compete chart later.

Note: As of time of publishing, pattern hasn’t been tested. If you find any errors, please feel to contact me, and I will fix it. I promise I don’t bite!

Note 9/9: Fixed error in row 1, in that there should be ch2 between clusters.
