Victorian CAL Cloth of the Month: April

Victorian CAL Cloth 4 is another “3Rs” design--Re-searched, Re-worked, Re-written. This pattern was originally published in 1878 for use in making counterpanes (bedspreads) or coverlets, the writer suggesting it be made in either squares or in stripes.

Worked in worsted weight yarn with a 5 mm hook it is--hand washed and gently blocked to shape--about 6 inches square. It is textured and has a design on it that I think would make a lovely afghan in spring colours, perhaps alternating the patterned squares with plainer ones. Making it in small squares would make it a wonderful project to take along on morning bus commutes, doctors’ office waiting rooms, etc. After you make one or 2 squares, the pattern is easily remembered. I turned mine into a bath puff :)

The stitches needed (Canadian/US terms!) are single crochet in the back loop, and double crochet.
