With three children, I spend a lot of time waiting in various places – waiting rooms, children’s
parties, swimming lessons… I needed an interesting but simple and repetitive crochet project to
keep me busy during all that waiting, and so the Waiting Shawl was born.
The Waiting Shawl is beautiful, but incredibly easy to make. It is the perfect project for beginners
looking to try out their newly acquired stitches. It is also an excellent companion for a Netflix
box set and for any waiting rooms or other places you find yourself hanging around and just
waiting. The pattern is a simple two row repeat, easy to remember, and can be put down at any
point without completing a row or even a stitch. It is completely reversible and is asymmetrical.
The yarn used for the sample shawl is Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK/8 ply in Mid Blue, but it can
be made in any yarn with the appropriate hook size. I recommend using a hook one size larger
than usual for the yarn. The shawl is worked from side to side and the sample was made by
continuing until all the yarn was used up. For a smaller or larger shawl, simply use less or more
yarn.
