Rarely have I had a yarn and design idea come together as quickly as happened here.
On a trip to the Hudson River Valley, we stopped in Poughkeepsie for the Walkway Over the Hudson.
Before going up to this railway-now-a-walkway, we paid a visit to the charming Walkway Wools yarn shop. I couldn’t resist a skein of Mother Frogging Yarns in a silk/merino blend, continuing my habit of falling for a yarn first and then deciding what to design or make with it later.
Literally the minute we were up on the Walkway, inspiration struck me: the structures of horizontal rails and vertical balustrades immediately became stitch patterns, and the shimmer of the Hudson River below us captured the sheen of the silky perfectly.
And here is the Walkway Scarf.

Not too long, not too short, the scarf is airy and light but still warm and cozy. It’s an easy, relaxing knit that takes but one skein of sock yarn.

It’s a great introduction to lace knitting: yo, ssk, and k2tog are the building blocks of lace, and here they are for beginners to practice.

The finished scarf is on the bias; you can block it lightly and keep the slant (as shown in the sample), or you can be more aggressive in your blocking and straighten out the “rails”. Your choice.

The finished measurements are 9.5” wide x 53” long.

You will need one skein of sock yarn, approximately 400-450 yards, and a US size 4 (3.5mm) needle.
