This stretchy double-broken rib stitch satchel was inspired by my utter lack of a suitable knitting bag – I had been using Ziploc baggies and whatever backpack was closest for far too long. So, when I received two skeins of yarn for my birthday, it was immediately decided that this is what it would become.

Stretchy enough to hold several skeins of yarn, needles, notions and those 3 half-finished projects you’ve been avoiding (yes, we know about those), the double-broken rib stitch is still firm enough to hold objects securely, keeping small items from falling out. In addition, the garter stitch bordering the lip of the bag includes several decreases, making the border slightly narrower than the body of the bag. This makes the bag more secure, and reduces the likelihood of anything falling out. If made from acrylic, this bag can be beat up and thrown into the washing machine as necessary. A liner for it may also be sewn, if desired.

The bag is mainly knit flat, in pieces, and so in addition to being super quick to make it is also fairly portable. As the personality of the piece can vary so much with the choice of yarn, this makes an excellent gift to give for birthdays or other occasions, and I plan on stocking up for holiday gift-giving.

One size. Gauge isn’t super important, as it is a bag, and unless you sew a liner it will stretch.

Make sure you have both straight needles and circular (29”).
